Sara's research programme sits at the intersection of Islamophobia studies, critical race theory, migration governance, and decolonial feminist critique — each cluster producing peer-reviewed outputs, policy reports, and public scholarship in both English and Arabic.

Islamophobia: theory, politics, and institutional forms

الإسلاموفوبيا: النظرية والسياسة والأشكال المؤسسية

Islamophobia as a racialised political technology — its architecture in multicultural governance, security frameworks, and anti-terror law. This cluster examines Islamophobia as a form of racial governance that operates through institutional mechanisms including counter-extremism frameworks, migration control, media discourse, and the weaponisation of "new antisemitism" as a disciplinary apparatus that constrains Muslim political agency.

Muslim community organisations and political agency

منظمات المجتمع المسلم والفاعلية السياسية

How Australian Muslim organisations understand, frame, and strategically respond to Islamophobia. Based on 150+ hours of interviews with 30+ community actors, this cluster maps organisational logics of action across Victoria — examining advocacy strategies, the impact of Palestinian solidarity on organisational positioning, and the constraints imposed by funding structures and securitised governance frameworks.

Media, representation, and framing

Critical discourse analysis of media coverage — from grammatical bias in Gaza reporting to Instagram content analysis of nine Australian news outlets during the 2023 Israel–Gaza war. This cluster interrogates how journalistic conventions produce epistemological violence and how the "Gaza exception" operates in Western media framing.

تحليل نقدي للخطاب الإعلامي — من التحيز النحوي في تغطية غزة إلى تحليل محتوى إنستغرام لتسع منافذ إخبارية أسترالية خلال حرب إسرائيل-غزة ٢٠٢٣. يستجوب هذا المجال كيف تنتج الأعراف الصحفية عنفًا معرفيًا وكيف تعمل "استثناء غزة" في التأطير الإعلامي الغربي.

Race, gender, and the academy

Racialised barriers for academics of colour in Australian universities. Co-author of a decolonial feminist analysis of women of colour faculty experiences and the recent Breaking the Glass Ceiling report (2026) documenting systemic exclusion mechanisms in hiring, promotion, and research funding.

الحواجز العنصرية للأكاديميين الملونين في الجامعات الأسترالية. شاركت في تأليف تحليل نسوي ما بعد كولونيالي لتجارب أعضاء هيئة التدريس من النساء الملونات وتقرير كسر السقف الزجاجي (٢٠٢٦) الذي يوثق آليات الإقصاء المنهجية في التوظيف والترقية وتمويل البحوث.

Migration, forced labour, and precarious lives

International students caught in migration skills assessment schemes and temporary visa traps. Research connects migration governance frameworks to racialised exploitation and unfree labour, examining how visa precarity produces structural vulnerability for migrant workers in Australia.

Refugee resettlement and global knowledge production

ARC project contributions on Afghan refugee settlement in Australia, interrogating colonial hierarchies in knowledge production between the Global South and North. This cluster examines how resettlement policy reproduces epistemic violence through its assumptions about refugee capacity and agency.
